Everything We Know So Far About iPhone 17
Share
Apple’s got four iPhones coming in 2025: the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and a completely new model called the iPhone 17 “Air.” There’s no “Plus” this year—Apple seems to be phasing it out since it never really took off. The Air isn’t a direct replacement for the Plus, but it basically fills that middle space between the standard and Pro models. From what we’re hearing, it’ll have a 6.6-inch screen and could be insanely thin—maybe even under 6mm.
At one point, it sounded like the Air might be more expensive than the Pro Max, but now it looks like it’ll be priced between the regular iPhone 17 and the Pro models. So it’ll kind of take over the “Plus” spot in terms of price and positioning—just with a new twist.
Another major change? All four models are expected to get ProMotion displays with 120Hz refresh rates. That’s huge because until now, Apple only gave that feature to the Pro models. It’s possible thanks to LTPO OLED tech, which also supports always-on displays—though it’s still unclear if the always-on feature will come to the non-Pro iPhones.
Apple might also upgrade the front glass this year. Instead of Ceramic Shield, they could be using a new anti-reflective material that’s supposed to be more resistant to scratches, drops, and wear-and-tear overall. As always, we don’t know the exact color options yet, but Apple tends to switch things up every year.
Now for the Pro models—Apple could move away from titanium and go with aluminum, maybe even combining it with glass for a half-glass, half-aluminum build. That design would still support MagSafe, and rumors suggest they might also change up the camera layout. Instead of the square bump we’re used to, we might see a horizontal pill-shaped one, and apparently, the iPhone 17 Air could have a similar design. So this might be a new look across the board.
Camera-wise, things are getting interesting. The front-facing camera might jump to 24MP with a six-element lens, which would be a nice upgrade. The 17 Pro Max is rumored to be getting a 48MP telephoto camera—way better than the 12MP one in current models. Meanwhile, the regular iPhone 17 might keep the usual Wide and Ultra Wide cameras, and the Air is expected to come with a single-lens 48MP rear shooter.
As for the name, we’ve seen it pop up as “iPhone 17 Slim” and “iPhone 17 Air,” but “Air” seems more likely—especially since Apple already uses that name for its thinner, lighter MacBooks and iPads. Thickness rumors are all over the place—some say as thin as 5mm, others say just over 6mm. Apple did manage to get the 12.9-inch M4 iPad Pro down to 5.1mm, but that’s a much bigger device. So while the iPhone 17 Air probably won’t be quite that thin, it’s still shaping up to be the slimmest iPhone yet.
